A man suspected of driving under the influence was in custody Monday after police say he ran a stop sign, causing an accident.

Police say it happened just before 5 p.m. at the intersection of North 26th and Gorman Ave.

A man driving a black Ford Explorer was heading east on Gorman Ave. Police say when he failed to stop at the stop sign, a red truck tried to swerve out of the way, but hit him. The driver of the black Ford Explorer lost control, hit a tree and then rolled over several times.

Police believe that driver was drunk. The speed limit in that neighborhood is 30 mph, but officers on scene told News Channel 25 the driver must have been going at least 50 mph.

Before police arrived on scene, the man had gotten out of his car to start running away. Police said citizens held the man down before officers arrived.

He suffered minor injuries. His name has not yet been released.

The woman driving the red truck suffered minor injuries. She was checked out by paramedics on scene.
