Warmer weather means mosquito season is in the horizon. With the looming threat of the Zika virus, it is important to make preemptive efforts to control the mosquito population.

The Better Business Bureau suggests considering pest control services to prevent the spread of the disease, as well as emptying and covering containers that hold water. This includes keeping gutters clean of debris and standing water, where mosquitoes tend to breed.

When choosing a pest control service, BBB says to compare prices and get references. They urge people to ask about safety and check the company’s license and insurance.

They also suggest using EPA-registered insect repellents and cover up with light-colored, long-sleeves and long pants.

The Zika virus is spread primarily through the bite of an Aedes mosquito. The disease can also be spread sexually. Texas has confirmed 23 cases of the virus.
