HILL COUNTY, TX (KXXV) - A Department of Public Safety official has confirmed a fatal crash that had traffic backed up in both directions on I-35 near the east-west split Thursday.

The wreck involved an 18-wheeler and multiple other vehicles near mile marker 370, north of Hillsboro, near the I-35 east-west split. DPS Trooper D.L. Wilson reports the accident was triggered by a driver going the wrong way in the southbound lanes.

The driver of a 1995 Chevy Lumina reportedly entered the interstate the wrong way from the Highway 77 Spur. The driver of an oncoming 1995 Peterbilt tractor trailer took evasive action, but collided with the car head-on. A 1997 Honda Accord following behind the 18-wheeler then hit the wreckage.

The driver of the Lumina, identified as 31-year-old Ronnie Rodell Rhodes, of Austin, was killed. The body was sent to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.

Trooper Wilson reports those inside the 18-wheeler and the Accord were not injured. TxDOT reported there was a Lifeflight helicopter on scene.
