UPDATE: Authorities say suspicious package found outside Sam's Club wasn't explosive

BELLMEAD, TX (KXXV) - Bellmead police say lab test results show the suspicious package found outside Sam's Club wouldn't have worked as a bomb.

It was a plastic tote containing a PVC pipe with wires coming out of it, as well as an aluminum water bottle and a glass jar with small traces of chemicals.

If caught, the person responsible could face charges for creating a bomb hoax.

Police sources Wednesday night say a suspicious device left in a bin outside the Sam's Club store in Bellmead earlier that day looked like a pipe bomb.

McLennan County law enforcement and area emergency crews spent hours investigating the bin containing the device that could have been a hoax or was intended to be a real explosive, according to authorities.

Bellmead Police Department Detective Kory Martin said chemicals and electronics were found in the bin. He added it wasn't clear if the device would have worked if it was intended to explode. It wasn't clear what kind of chemicals were found in the bin.

A News Channel 25 crew on scene heard two large booms, which was the bomb squad opening the bin to get at a few canisters inside. Emergency crews collected all of the substances inside, and some will be kept as evidence. A lab is testing the contents.

According to a Sam's Club spokeswoman, the store was not evacuated, but the employees and customers were moved to the opposite end of the building, following the guidance of authorities.

Highway 84 has been reopened and customers were let back into Sam's Club at 5:30 p.m. Who left the bin there and why are being investigated.

The McLennan County bomb squad is currently inspecting a suspicious package reported to police Wednesday afternoon.

Bellmead police received a call of a suspicious package found between Sam's Club and Hwy 84.

The package was a blue tote left on the side of the building. That section of the building is clear, but Sam's Club has not been evacuated. Nearby roads have been closed as authorities inspect the item.

The McLennan County bomb squad is currently there.

We have a crew at the scene and will continue to update this story as this story develops.
