Renowned fiddler Johnny Gimble has died at the age of 88. His daughter says he died Saturday morning at a nursing facility in Marble Falls, just west of Austin.

Gimble's career included a stint as a Texas Playboy with the legendary Western swing musician Bob Wills and he then gained fame for his backup work with country stars ranging from Merle Haggard to Carrie Underwood.

Gimble leaves behind his son Dick Gimble, a long time music instructor at MCC, and his grandson Jon Gimble, a McLennan County Clerk.
