Woman dies in freak barrel racing accident

WACO, TX (KXXV) - A woman is dead after her barrel racing event goes terribly wrong at the Heart of Texas Fair Grounds in Waco.

People were shocked and saddened by the news of a horsewoman's death.

It was a different tone Monday, but despite what happened, racers competed in the final day of the event.

The 25th Annual American Novice Horse Association Shoot Out is a three-day barrel racing and poles competition. The competition took a tragic turn in an instant.

Jeanine McMinn from Magnolia died at the hospital after an accident on the track Sunday.

West Allison President and CEO of Extraco Event Center described what happened.

"There was an accident that occurred when a horse struck a lady during the barrel race Sunday," says Allison.

Later that night, McMinn's daughter, Tiffani Wooten ran a barrel race in her mother's memory with the support of the entire crowd. In a Facebook post, Wooten said her mother died doing what she loved.

Event personnel say nothing like this has happened at the Extraco Center before.

"It's part of showing horses,” says Allison. “Not here; but I'm sure it's happened elsewhere."

The Waco police department is calling this an accident and says they won't investigate any further. However, Extraco officials say they are conducting their own investigation to find out what may have caused the deadly accident.
