UPDATE: Lockdown lifted at Killeen elementary school

KILLEEN, TX (KXXV) - Saegert Elementary School in Killeen was put on lockdown for a few hours Thursday morning as Killeen police dealt with a standoff in the area.

Carroll Smith with Killeen PD says Saegert Elementary School in Killeen was locked down as a precaution while police dealt with a man who barricaded himself in a car in the nearby neighborhood.

There was no immediate threat to the school. All the children were safe during this lockdown. Part of South W.S. Young was also blocked off during this time and some residents were evacuated from their homes per protocol.

Police say they received a call just before 8 a.m. Thursday, about a suicidal subject in the 2200 block of Mikulec Dr. Responding officers found a 39-year-old man in his black Honda Civic with a weapon. An officer tried to make contact, but determined that he could not make contact safely.

The Tactical Response Unit was called out to the scene and responded just before 8:30 a.m. They began negotiating with the man, who was eventually taken into custody just after 11 a.m. He was taken for medical evaluation. As of Thursday afternoon, he will not be charged with anything.

The following message was sent out by Killeen ISD following this incident:

"Hello Saegert parents,

This is Mrs. Charles-Walters. Saegert Elementary School has been given the "all clear" and is no longer on external lockdown. I would like to emphasize that, at no time, were any students or staff in any danger. We will release students, to include walkers, at their normal time.

In addition to this message we will be sending home a letter regarding this incident.

Thank you for your continued support!"

Here is a statement from Interim Superintendent, Dr. John Craft:

"This morning was a dynamic situation that involved the efforts and cooperation of the staff of Saegert Elementary School and multiple other departments within and outside of the district.  Through this cooperation we were able to quickly initiate our emergency response plan and maintain a safe environment within the school while implementing the external lock down.  KISD greatly appreciates the quick response of the Saegert Elementary School staff and all others who worked to keep our students and staff safe, and we express tremendous appreciation to all of the parents and guardians for their support and understanding throughout the lock down."
