Charges Filed Against Former Justice of the Peace

Federal charges were filed Friday against former McLennan County Justice of the Peace Jean Laster Boone.

The complaint alleges she stole Social Security Income benefits from a friend's account for which she was cosignatory. According to defense attorney Thomas West, after the friend died, the Social Security Administration continued sending checks.

SSI investigated and recovered more than $40,000 in overpaid benefits. When notified there was some benefit money missing, Laster Boone admitted to using $16,517 on repairs to the man's house.

Laster Boone's other defense attorney, Jim Dunnam, said "She accepted responsibility and has already fully repaid the money to the federal government." Her arraignment and guilty plea is set for September 25th. She faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Laster Boone is currently on felony probation for tampering with government records regarding false mileage numbers while she was Justice of the Peace.
