Math STAAR Test Requirement Will Not Count for 2014-2015

TEMPLE, TX (KXXV) - Students will have a year to transition to revised curriculum standards for the STAAR test.

This will be the first year 5th and 8th grade students will take the test only once.

However, this year, math STAAR assessments will not determine if students advance to the next grade level.

Under state law, students in grades 5 and 8 must pass the STAAR reading and math exam to move onto grades 6 and 9.

Students must still pass the reading exam to be promoted this year.

At the Temple Independent School District, teachers will look at students’ math grades and local tests to make up for the math portion of the exam.

Temple ISD Superintendent Dr. Robin Battershell said generally school districts and students get a year to assimilate to new tests.

"On one hand, the students get a benefit in that they don't have to pass the new standards,” said Battershell. “But in the other hand, they only have one shot to pass that test so in my opinion that kind of evens out.”

Battershell said she hopes the state looks into allowing students to take the test more than once.
