KILLEEN, TX (KXXV) -

A Killeen police officer has been released from the hospital after being injured during the pursuit of a fleeing suspect.

Just after 5 a.m. Saturday, an officer tried to stop a silver Nissan for a traffic violation in the area of Elms Rd. and Ft. Hood St. The driver fled from the officer and a pursuit ensued through several neighborhoods, ending when the suspect came to the dead end of Palmtree and Coral Bay. As the officer was exiting his vehicle, the suspect began to flee and hit the officer with their car.

The officer opened fire on the vehicle as it fled west on Coral Bay. When the vehicle stopped, the suspect fled on foot. He was eventually found hiding behind an air conditioning unit in the 3600 block of Coral Bay by a K-9 unit that was deployed to help with the search. The suspect was transferred to Carl R. Darnall Medical Center, and then airlifted to Scott and White Memorial Hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound, where he is listed in stable condition. Police are withholding the suspect's name pending criminal charges.

The injured officer was taken to Scott and White Memorial Hospital for treatment and released. He is on administrative leave per police protocol, and his name is being withheld.
