Police: Man steals $5,000 using fake Craigslist ad

WACO, TX (KXXV) - A man is in the Bell County Jail after police say he used a fake Craigslist truck ad to steal $5,000 from a local elderly man.

Arthur Goolsby has been charged with exploitation of an elderly individual for the theft.

A 70-year-old man told police that he tried to buy a Chevrolet truck from Goolsby off Craigslist. Goolsby had placed an ad for a 1955 Chevrolet truck on the site.

Goolsby and the man agreed to a selling price of $19,000 for the truck. Goolsby wanted a $9,000 deposit, but the buyer said he would only send a $5,000 deposit, then pay the rest when he got the truck.

The affidavit says Goolsby told the buyer he was in Galveston and would deliver the truck on June 7. The buyer went to a Waco bank and transferred $5,000 to an account Goolsby told him to. Goolsby then stopped talking with the buyer and never delivered the truck.

Police found that Goolsby did now own the truck he was advertising on Craigslist. They also found he was advertising the truck on other selling sites out of McAllen, TX.
