Traffic stop leads to $80,000 cocaine bust

A routine traffic stop by Hill County deputies led to the seizure of an estimated $70,000-$80,000 worth of cocaine Wednesday.

Hill County Sheriff Michael Cox says deputies made the stop near the 374 mile marker on I-35, about midmorning. Permission to search the vehicle was given to deputies after the driver reportedly responded to the deputy's questions in a suspicious way.

Cocaine was found in a speaker well in the back of the SUV. The estimated 1.5 kilos of cocaine was wrapped in plastic, then wrapped in lead, in an apparent attempt to hide the drugs from x-rays that might have been used to search the vehicle for contraband.

The driver was taken into custody and is awaiting arraignment on drug possession charges.
