Classes begin later this month, but some area teachers are already garnering awards.

Midway ISD educator Nicole Grygar has been named a national finalist for the Presidential Award in elementary science. Grygar is a K-4 Science Lab teacher at Woodway Elementary School.

She is one of eight in Texas nominated for that prestigious award, honoring those whose innovative methods bring teaching to life in the classroom. It is the highest award an educator can receive in the United States.

Award winners will be announced next summer, and will receive $10,000, a citation signed by the President of the United States, and a paid trip for two to Washington, D.C. to attend recognition events and professional development opportunities.

Education Service Center Region 12 in Waco also recognized 88 area math and science teachers recently.  Callie Sirman of Academy ISD was named the Math Teacher of the Year, and Matt Menefee of La Vega ISD was selected the Science Teacher of the Year.
