Students choose between school and football

RIESEL - A technical school has classes until 4:15 p.m., and that's leaving some students having to choose between those classes or after school activities.

Two students have already quit the Riesel football because of the situation. Students in Riesel have the opportunity to go to the Greater Waco Advanced Manufacturing Academy, or GWAMA. However, afternoon classes go from 1 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. and Riesel afternoon classes start at 4 p.m. The mother of one of the students who quit the team says her son got the impression he had to choose between one or the other.

"I don't think it's fair, every child should have a choice in what they want to do," Nikki Holder said. "I think it's better when you have that High School experience I feel that people should be able to do whatever they want to do."

Holder says she does feel proud of her son for choosing GWAMA instead of football. However, other students are having to make the same choice as well. Waco ISD says they've had nearly 300 students sign up this year, but they're expecting a lot less because some students will choose football or band. Waco ISD spokesperson Dale Caffey says they are working on a solution to let students leave at 3:15 p.m.

However, schools like Riesel aren't very close to GWAMA. Riesel head coach Monte Endres says it's not okay for students to show up after practice time consistently.

"You can't run a team with guys showing up at different times," Endres said. "A team just does not work like that, you got to have consistency and commitment and everybody go by the same rules and everybody do the same thing and that's what team is all about."

"We'll work with them, but if it's consistent and it gets later and later, yeah there's going to be some issues with that. I'm  not being unfair with anybody. I'm just saying when practice starts you're expected to be there."

Endres says he's not drawing a line between football and education, but he says if one conflicts with the other, then at some point a student has to make a choice.

The school district does provide a bus for students to go to and from GWAMA.
