Temple council tables vote on illegal immigration

TEMPLE, TX (KXXV) - The Temple City Council tabled a vote until next week for a resolution that could ban the housing of illegal immigrants.

If the resolution is passed, Temple would be adding to an already existing resolution passed by Bell County in July.

The resolution is a modified version of a proposal brought forward by the members of the Central Texas Tea Party in July. Council members said they expected the resolution to pass easily, citing fiscal and public safety concerns.

"In this instance we would not be repaid. We would be using taxpayer dollars to be taking care of these non-citizens," said council member, Tim Davis who said his reason was solely financial.

At the bi-monthly meeting Thursday night, council members heard testimony about the subject from residents on both sides of the issue.
"We have to help them," said resident Janie Valencia. "They are God's children and just because they're from across the border doesn't make them less important."

Valencia's opinion was in the minority during the meeting. Other residents supported the measure for similar reasons as the council members.

"I'd like to see it [passed] because I don't think we should be saddled,"said Temple resident Travis Hall, who had concerns about how an influx of young children and teenagers would affect the public school system. "This is going to have a tremendous impact on our public school. When we take 50,000 or 60,000 students across the nation that we didn't plan for."

The council is expected to vote on the resolution in the coming days. Members also nominated Russell Schneider to the position of Mayor pro-tem.
