Lawmakers discuss border security, West explosion

Posted: Updated:
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - A legislative committee is scrutinizing increased efforts to secure the Texas-Mexico border amid a surge of unaccompanied immigrant children crossing into the U.S.

Members of the state House Homeland Security and Public Safety Committee will get an update Tuesday on Gov. Rick Perry's ordered deployment of 1,000 National Guard troops to the border. That is costing Texas roughly $12 million per month.

Also likely to be discussed is the governor and other top Republicans' authorization to spend an extra $1.3 million a week to aid Department of Public Safety border operations.

The committee is also mulling proposed legislation on the storage of ammonium nitrate. That chemical was stored in flammable wooden contains at a fertilizer plant in the town of West, where a 2013 explosion killed 15 people.
