MISSION, Texas (AP) - A recent patrol with state troopers on the Rio Grande illustrates the challenges that as many as 1,000 National Guard troops will face along the Texas-Mexico border in deterring criminal activity.
Three heavily-armed Texas patrol boats rounded a bend in the Rio Grande on Thursday afternoon and came upon two young men paddling an inflatable raft full-speed ahead toward the Mexican shore.
The men passed their raft and paddles up the bank to others as the state troopers and game wardens bobbed helplessly in their boats.
Gov. Rick Perry said this week the troops' presence will deter criminal activity as they support state troopers already working the border in greater numbers.
