State seeks to revoke Prime Prep charter

Posted: Updated:

DALLAS (AP) - The Texas Education Agency has decided to revoke the charter of an academy co-founded by Pro Football Hall-of-Famer Deion Sanders.

In a letter dated Tuesday, the TEA informed the owners of Prime Prep Academy that it would revoke its charter for not meeting standards of fiscal management and non-compliance with the state accounting standards and requirements for the federal free-lunch program.

The school has until July 31 to appeal the decision and seek a hearing. It could remain open while its appeal is pending.

In messages on his Twitter account, Sanders promised an appeal and blamed his former partner D.L. Wallace for the woes. No listed telephone number could be found for Wallace.

The academy has been subject in the past to criticism by state agencies.
