Salado coach gets probation for inappropriate relations with a student

RIESEL, TX (KXXV) - A Salado Independent School District coach and math teacher has received 8 years of deferred adjudication probation for having improper relations with a student.

In 426th District Court, Marcos Rene Garcia got his punishment for improper relationship between educator and student. Garcia resigned after a parent of a 16-year-old girl reported inappropriate relations between the teacher and their child.

After learning of the behavior, Salado ISD Superintendent, Michael Novotny contacted the Salado Police Department and the Child Protective Services.

In a letter Novotny wrote to parents, he said "We are reviewing our existing processes and procedures for reinforcing our staff's knowledge abut policies, laws, and ethics."

"We will be putting together a professional learning activity in the near future to remind staff members about their obligations in this area, including the use (or misuse) of social media, text messages, Facebook, Twitter and other resources."
