UPDATE: Authorities identify body recovered at Lake Belton

Posted:
BELTON - The Bell County Sheriff's Office has identified the body that was recovered in Lake Belton Wednesday morning.

Rescue personnel were sent to Leona Park after a deputy patrolling near Lake Belton was flagged down by witnesses who said a boat was running in circles about 9:20 a.m. Wednesday. This was in the river channel, about a quarter mile north of the Long Bridge on Highway 36 at Leona Park.

The boat has been recovered, but no person was initially found. The search continued for several hours before they recovered the body from the lake.

The body was found at 12:50 p.m. within 20 feet of where the search began, in about 8-12 feet of water. He was pronounced dead and an autopsy has been ordered. Authorities have identified the body found in Lake Belton as 48-year-old Thomas Buss of Killeen.

Fishing gear was found in the boat. Water levels in that area of the lake are well above normal. The area has numerous tree stumps and other underwater obstacles, making it a popular fishing area.

Emergency medical personnel were on scene, along with Parks & Wildlife personnel, sheriff's deputies, and the Morgan's Point Dive Team.
The investigation will be conducted by officers with the Parks & Wildlife Department.
