Victim testifies against Fairfield coach in sex assault trial

Posted:
FAIRFIELD - The state had to do some damage control as some shocking revelations came to light at the trial of the Fairfield girls basketball coach who is accused of being involved in the sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl.

The now 16-year-old victim took the stand Tuesday against LaDonna Brackens, but apologized for lying under oath at Anthony Thibodeaux’s trial last December.

The victim’s cross examination was intense as the defense called her a liar and questioned her character. The victim did admit to being untruthful about a series of text messages between her and Brackens and between her and Thibodeaux after the alleged rape. She did maintain that the rape did happen and Brackens watched and told her not to tell.

For hours, the defense hammered the victim about phone records that showed the victim had multiple conversations with both the defendant and Thibodeaux.

While going through more than one-hundred pages of records the defense asked the victim over and over again if she remembered what those conversations were about and the over, and over again the victim said she didn't’t but she did say some of those messages were threatening, demanding her not to tell.

Toward the end of her cross examination the defense asked her why the jury should believe her now after she’s already admitted to lying under oath, and she simply said because “it happened,” and now that she’s older, she wouldn’t lie again.

Though Brackens isn’t accused of physically violating the teen, she faces the same sexual assault charges as convicted rapist Thibodeaux for watching the assault happen in her home and doing nothing to stop it.
