Waco boy meets detective who saved him from drowning

A Waco boy nearly drowned on the Fourth of July.  Monday, he got to thank the police detective who saved him.  It was nothing but smiles and laughs, which is a far cry from the scene Friday evening.

That's when 7-year-old Donnie Edmonds slipped from the river walk, into the Brazos during a Fourth of July celebration in Waco. Detective Dennis Taylor saw Donnie flailing in the water.

The officer jumped in with his uniform and gear on and saved the little boy.  Donnie says, "I'm really thankful that the cops were there and I'm thankful because they saved me and for everything they did for me."

Another officer and bystander helped with the rescue. Donnie was taken to the hospital to get checked out, but he wasn't seriously hurt.  Monday, the boy and his family came to the Waco Police Department to express their gratitude.

Donnie does not know how to swim, but he says lessons are next on his summer agenda.
