Woman found dead after fire in motel room identified

KILLEEN - Maintenance staff found a woman inside a motel room in Killeen after smelling smoke inside.

Killeen police and the fire department responded to a call about a structure fire at the Palace Inn on Veterans Memorial Blvd., just before noon Saturday. Maintenance personnel told officers they smelled smoke in a second story room while looking through the rooms that were supposed to be checked out.

"The maintenance people used their pass key to get in to check the welfare of anyone inside and when they did they found a female that appeared to be deceased," Killeen Police Department spokesperson Carroll Smith said.

Paramedics confirmed the 25-year-old woman was dead. Her body has been sent to Dallas for an autopsy. Smith says she was the only person checked in to that room. The woman has been identified as Shainta Nicole Tiller of Grand Prairie.

Smith also says they won't know her cause of death until after the autopsy. Investigators are also working to find out the cause of the fire.
