Two Waco PD officers save boy who falls into Brazos

WACO -

Two police officers are being called heroes after rescuing a 6-year-old boy who fell into the Brazos River in downtown Waco Friday night.

Waco PD officer Dennis Taylor saw the boy slip on a mossy area at the edge of the river and fall in.  He immediately went underwater and was unable to swim, according to police spokesman Sgt. Patrick Swanton.

Taylor was in full uniform with about 25 lbs. of gear when he quickly jumped into the water and pulled the boy to the surface.  Another officer, Daniel Harper, also jumped in and helped Taylor and some witnesses get the boy to safety.

Swanton said the boy, seen on the left side of the picture sitting down, was at the river with an adult male who may have been his brother.  The 6-year-old was taken to Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Hospital as a precaution.  The officers were not hurt.

Thousands of people were in that area for the annual Fourth on the Brazos event that ended with a fireworks show about 10 p.m.
