UPDATE: Authorities announce likely cause of Coryell County farm explosion

Posted:
CORYELL COUNTY - Following investigations by ATF explosive experts and Coryell County Sheriff's Office investigators, authorities have released the likely cause of the farm explosion in Coryell County on Sunday, that killed one person and injured two others.

As of Thursday, authorities say they believe the three men involved in the explosion, were going out to a field with bags of combustible gas to see an explosion, when there was a spark, which caused an accidental explosion.

The day after the explosion, June 30, ATF explosive experts, along with investigators from the Coryell County Sheriff's Office, collected evidence from the scene. On Thursday, July 3, investigators interviewed witnesses of the explosion.

Investigators believe the three men were in the farm shop at Huffman Farms, filling large plastic bags with acetylene, a gas that is commonly used to weld and cut steel. This gas is extremely combustible. According to investigators, they were putting the filled bags into a plastic container and were going to take them to field and ignite them so they could see the explosion.

While they were filling up the bag, investigators say something sparked. This set off the acetylene, and caused a large explosion that killed Charl Wynard Swart, 55, and seriously injuring two others. The two men injured in the blast have been identified as Steve Langenegger, 50, and Jan Vanmerwe, 24. They are both still in serious condition at hospitals.

This case will stay open until the forensic results from the ATF are available.

No charges are expected to be filed in the case.
