Waco plans million dollar renovation of animal shelter

Posted:
WACO - Some changes are in store for Waco's animal shelter, and the city is putting some of the money in the kitty, and they're hoping the community will help them raise the rest of the money to upgrade that shelter.

The city has been planning the renovation since last year.

Both the humane society and Waco Assistant City Manager Wiley Stem III says the multimillion dollar upgrade is long over due.

“Well the facilities are real old and really it’s at the end of its life and it’s been at the ends of its life for quite a while now. So we need to upgrade the facility and upgrade the capacity,” says Stem. “We’ve got maintenance issues associated with the kennels that are difficult to deal with and they use up resources that really should be used for taking care of the animals and not repairing the kennels.”

The renovation will add parking, a new onsite clinic and nearly 40 spacious additional kennels which would be good for the staff and the animals.

“Being more efficient and being able to clean more efficiently is going to be a huge time saver and for the public, being able to walk in at one of the buildings and go through the whole building and see all the animals at one time is going to be a really great asset for us,” says Bland. “And of course I think the animals they’re going to be happier because they’re going to have more space."

The city will put in half a million dollars and ask its partners and the community to come up with at least $1.5 million dollars to pay for the renovation.

Both the city and the humane society hope the renovation will help the shelter get to "no kill" status.

“If we can have more people coming in and they can see the animals better and they can see their personalities better it should help with adoptions,” says Bland.

The city is still in the beginning stages, but says ideally they would like to break ground sometime next year.
