Car crashes into Cameron home during police chase

CAMERON - Cameron police report a car being pursued by officers went out of control early Sunday morning and caused an estimated $20,000 worth of damage after crashing into a house.

Cameron PD got a call at 1:15 a.m. Sunday about an erratic driver in Cameron. The driver was reportedly driving fast up and down streets, turning corners without braking and making disruptive noises. An off duty officer also called in to complain about this.

Responding officers arrived and clocked a car going 47 mph in a 30 mph neighborhood zone. Officers tried to stop the car, but the driver fled. The driver was southbound on Jackson Ave., when he failed to make a turn at the 6th St. intersection, and crashed into a house in the 600 block of East 6th St. The car did an estimated $20,000 worth of damage to the house, from the garage to the kitchen.

Officers checked the car, but the driver was not inside. Officer thought he was in the house he crashed into. As they were getting ready to check the house, officers heard what they believed was a gunshot and glass breaking.

Officers called DPS and the Milam County Sheriff's Department for help with a possible barricaded suspect. Authorities secured the area, and the Cameron PD entry team went into the home. They found that the suspect was not in the home.

The car was removed from the house, and DNA was taken from inside. During their investigation, Travis John Pena, of Cameron, was identified as a suspect and was charged with evading arrest or apprehension with other charges possibly pending.

Pena was arrested at 7 a.m. Monday morning by the Cameron Police Department. He is in the Milam County Jail, awaiting arraignment.
