12-year-old boy who drowned in lake identified, park holding fundraiser

AXTELL, TX (KXXV) -

A 12-year-old boy has been found dead after he went missing Saturday evening.

The McLennan County Sheriff's Office says a 12-year-old boy was reported missing by his family around 5 p.m. Saturday, near the BSR Cable Park. After a couple hours of searching they called the Sheriff's Office for help.

The 12-year-old has been identified as Sirmuel Calhoun.

Officials found the boy's shoes at the park where people often go swimming. Chief Deputy Matt Cawthon says an off duty Waco Fire Department employee responded with his snorkel gear to look for the child. The Texas Game Wardens were also called but before they got there, the off duty fireman found the boy's body underwater around 7:30 p.m. The boy was found with a flotation device above him.

No lifeguards were on duty and investigators say he died of an apparent drowning. No foul play is suspected.

BSR Cable Park announced it will hold a July 4th BBQ fundraiser to benefit the family. It will start at noon, and continue until a fireworks display about 10:30 p.m.

The park said, "Words cannot describe the pain we feel for the family of that little boy. Lives will be affected forever."
