Convicted Murderer to Appeal Life in Prison Sentence

WACO, TX (KXXV) - Convicted murderer Elton Reynoso will appeal the jury’s decision to sentence him to life in prison for the murder of Dominique Garcia in 2012.

Investigators said Garcia was shot and killed after a fight at the intersection of Rolando Ave. and Princeton Street in Waco.

Jurors took nearly 30 minutes to decide on a punishment. They had the option to sentence him from five to 99 years in prison or life in prison.

Garcia’s family had mixed emotions as they heard the verdict. His mother, Alethea Garcia-Calvin took the stand after the sentencing. She sobbed as she asked Reynoso his reasoning for killing her son. She also called him a coward and told him he deserved this sentencing. However, Garcia’s grandmother, Gloria Jimenez, told Reynoso she did not forgive him because he took away something that cannot be replaced. She called him “cobarde,” which is the Spanish word for coward.

Family members hugged and cheered as they left the courtroom. Christopher Brooks who watched his brother die, was grateful for this sentence.

“It is one of the best feelings in the world because the person who killed my brother is finally in jail and we got justice for Dominique,” said Brooks. “I am happy but it will still not bring my brother back.”

Sutton said he respects the jury’s decision because they did what they needed to do. However, he said this sentence is hard for his family as they will have a long separation from Reynoso.

“Anytime that a young person loses their life, it is a tragic…circumstance,” said Sutton.

Reynoso will be eligible for parole after 30 years.
