Elton Reynoso sentenced to life in prison for 2012 murder

WACO, TX (KXXV) - Elton Reynoso has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of University High School student Dominique Garcia in May 2012. The sentence came down Friday afternoon, less than a day after a jury found him guilty of the murder.

The prosecution continues to make its case before the jury decides on a punishment for a convicted murderer Friday.

On Thursday, jurors found Elton Reynoso guilty of killing University High School student Dominique Garcia in May 2012. He could face from 5 to 99 years in prison or life in prison.

On Friday, Reynoso’s wife took the stand and she cried while she described instances Reynoso hit her with a belt and hurt her with a knife. Members of the victim’s family started crying as she testified.

In addition, she claimed that he forced her to work extra hours and give him her paycheck when she received it. She said she did not leave him because she wanted for it to work out because they were married. Currently, she said she has a protective order against him because she said she fears he will find her and kill her.

Dominique Garcia’s mother also took the stand and told an emotional testimony to the jury. She described Garcia as someone who made you feel happy when you were down and someone who touched many lives. Her words not only caused Garcia's family to cry, but also Reynoso’s sister.

The prosecution presented the jury with Reynoso’s criminal record, which included burglaries, theft, and possession of marijuana in other counties in Texas. In addition, he had charges for criminal trespassing and endangering a child.

The trial will resume at 2 p.m. on Friday.
