Investigation underway after money found missing from local city

KILLEEN, TX (KXXV) - The Texas Rangers are investigating why a "concerning amount" of money is missing from the city of Mart.

Mayor Pro Tem Henry Witt III says a monthly audit found some inconsistencies in the budget. After looking into it, Henry says they found some money was missing from the Water Department. He wouldn't say how much, but says it was enough to ask McLennan County District Attorney Abel Reyna what to do.

Witt says Reyna told them to contact the Texas Rangers and then they started investigating the morning of June 24.

"When you shake things up in a city that hasn't been shaken up for the past 20-30 years, bad habits can surface and undesirables will surface. But when those things surface our taxpayers and our citizens can rest assured that they will be dealt with accordingly," Witt said.

Reyna said Wednesday his office "is not involved as of yet." It's unclear how long the investigation will take but Witt says they're seeking possibly criminal charges.
