Testimony starts in Waco capital murder trial

Yalando Renee Lind Yalando Renee Lind
WACO - At least five people testified Tuesday in the capital murder trial of a woman accused of being involved in the stabbing death of her mother in 2008.

Yalanda Lind was indicted in June 2012 and charged on two counts of capital murder and one count of aggravated assault. Lind's mother Rebecca Leonard died after being stabbed to death at her home on Watt Ave. Leonard's boyfriend was also severely injured during the attack.

Lind's boyfriend, Jeremy Lowrey, pleaded guilty to capital murder and attempted murder in this case, and is serving two life sentences concurrently. He will be eligible for parole after 30 years.

Some of those who testified described Lind as being cold when she informed them her mother was stabbed to death. However, a former cell mate said she is guilty of helping her ex-boyfriend Lowrey attack her mother.

According to the cell mate, she overheard Lind talk in her sleep saying she was going to take out her mother and she would leave the back door open for someone to enter Leonard's home.

In addition, her cell mate said Lind told her she would not get any money from her mother's will, if she died of natural causes. That statement is in line with the prosecution's claim that stated Lind wanted to rob Leonard.

Defense attorneys questioned the prisoner's testimony, saying she wanted to be paroled. However, that inmate said she testified against Lind because she does not like people who kill their mothers.

Leonard's brother and best friend said Lind told them her ex-boyfriend, Lowrey, broke into her house and beat her up. After this, he stabbed her mother and her mother's boyfriend.

The lead prosecutor said Lind did not have many scars or scratches and that there was no sign of a break-in.
