Expands robust intellectual property portfolio to advance the accuracy and potential for next-generation applications of performance biometric data sensors for wearables

RALEIGH, N.C., June 23, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Valencell, a leader in performance biometric data sensor technology, has been granted two new patents by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The patents relate to the accuracy for next-generation performance biometric data sensors. These new patents bring the Company's robust portfolio of critical patents on their unique optomechanical approach to biometric measurements for any form factor, including the ear, arm, and wrist, to 14. In addition, the Company has more than 45 patents pending.

"We have dedicated years of research and development efforts to establishing a robust intellectual property portfolio of critical patents. We say our patents are critical, because without our inventions, accurately measuring biometrics during exercise with audio earbuds and other wearables would not be feasible. Our optomechanical technology enables the most accurate optical measurement of biometric data, in any form factor, in any environment, and during all levels of activity – even strenuous exercise," said Dr. Steven LeBoeuf, President of Valencell, Inc. "These most recent patents support our extensive product roadmap as brands look to enhance or expand their product and service offerings."

U.S. Pat. No. 8,702,607, "Targeted advertising systems and methods," issued April 22nd, 2014 relates to systems and methods for monitoring various physiological and environmental factors with wearable devices and presenting advertisements based on health assessments. This patented technology enables the ability to provide ads to people who may not even be aware that they are at a health risk.

U.S. Pat. No. 8,700,111, "Light-guiding devices and monitoring devices incorporating same," issued April 15th, 2014 relates to monitoring devices comprised of light guides embedded within earbuds. This patented technology enables accurate optical monitoring of biometric information even during intense exercise.

"Combining this patent with Valencell's earlier patent grants covering noninvasive blood flow monitoring and motion-resistant health and fitness assessments, we have taught the world how to turn popular wearable devices into accurate health and fitness monitors", said LeBoeuf.

Valencell now owns a total of 14 critical patents, with dozens of additional patents pending. Four wearable products currently in the market are powered by Valencell's PerformTek technology, including the LG Heart Rate Earphones, the Scosche Rhythm+ and Smart+ armbands, and the iriverON sports headset. Numerous additional products are planned to launch between now and the end of the year. These fitness products demonstrate the wide range of PerformTek sensor applications, ideal for consumer electronics manufacturers, mobile device and accessory makers, sports and fitness brands, gaming companies, headset and ear bud manufacturers, the military and healthcare brands for integration into their products.
