Man killed in shootout with Hamilton County deputies

HAMILTON COUNTY - A man in Hamilton was killed after getting into a shootout with deputies after authorities say pointing a gun at his ex-wife.

The Hamilton County Sheriff's received a call about a possible active shooter just after 1 p.m. Friday afternoon. When they got to The Book Trail, just south of Hamilton, they talked with the woman who called 911.

She told deputies her former husband went into the business and made a threatening statement and pointed a pistol at her at close range. She said the weapon malfunctioned and did not fire and she ran away while her former husband fled on a pickup.

Deputies tracked down the man to a home. When they got there they found the man in his pickup. When deputies surrounded him, investigators say he came out of the truck with a semi-automatic rifle. Officers shouted at him to put the gun down but officials say he then raised the rifle at the officers.

The officers and man then started shooting at each other. The Sheriff's Office says this last for three minutes until the man was shot and fell to the ground. No officers were injured in the exchange.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. An investigation is underway by the Texas Rangers.
