Texas inmates mistakenly released due to software snafu

Posted: Updated:

DALLAS (AP) - Dallas police officials say snafus with a new computer system led authorities to mistakenly release more than 20 inmates.

Most of the inmates are accused of property crimes but some are facing felony charges that include domestic violence. Officials said Wednesday the inmates were released this month from the Dallas County jail without posting bail days after their arrests.

Deputy Chief Christina Smith says officers are working to find the inmates.

One purpose of the new software launched June 1 is to store all related records in an electronic database. But critics such as police union president Richard Todd tell The Dallas Morning News the system is "a nightmare."

Smith acknowledged officers have had to refile hundreds of reports because of mistakes committed when the reports were originally entered into the system.
