Local school district could allow school personnel to have guns on campus

WEST - UPDATE: A local school district has delayed a vote on whether to allow certain employees to carry guns on campus if they have their concealed handgun license.

The West Board of Trustees was supposed to talk about the policy at Wednesday night's meeting, but they tabled it and plan to pick it up at a later meeting.

State law allows employees to carry if they have the CHL's, but that guideline comes in many forms, like campus police officers, which don't always work for smaller districts like West.

With school shootings becoming more and more frequent, student safety is at the top of one local school boards list.
West Independent School District is considering allowing certain employees to carry guns if they have their concealed handgun license.

The West School Board will discuss creating a policy at Wednesday night's meeting at 6:30 at the administration building.

Superintendent Dr. Marty Crawford and the board president will see if the rest of the trustees want to move forward with creating a gun policy that would allow guns on campus, at sporting events, at any interscholastic events and school board meetings.

State law allows school employees to carry if they have their CHL's and the guideline comes in many forms like campus police or school safety or resource officers. However, Crawford says some of those options just don't work for smaller districts.

“Due to our size and our location along with our finances, rural schools just aren’t afforded the opportunity have their own school officers,” says Crawford. “You can also do it with an SRO through your local police department but they’re busy doing other things."

Regardless of which way the board ultimately decides to go, Crawford says the conversation about allowing certain personnel to carry guns, is long over due.

“We just look at it as an opportunity to maybe provide little bit more enhanced security for our students and staff,” says Crawford.

Crawford says right now they're using a suggested policy from the Texas Association of School Boards as a template, but he emphasized that the idea is still in the beginning stages.

If the school board eventually votes to allow teachers and staff to carry guns on campus it would be the first for a school in our area both Waco and Killeen Independent School District’s don't allow it.
