Central Texas VAs not on short list for wait times, but flagged for further review

CENTRAL TEXAS - Four of the medical centers serving veterans in Texas had some of the nation's longest wait times for new patients, but the VA clinics in Waco and Temple were not on that short list.

However, the Central Texas VA Network, which includes Waco and Temple, has been flagged for further review. 6% of its appointments took longer than 30 days. New patients averaged 50 days out, or 54 days for specialist care.

This comes as reports show VA officials kept secret waiting lists in an attempt to decrease the backlog of veterans waiting for care.

The VA also announced today that it is establishing a new patient satisfaction measurement program. As well as removing the 14 day scheduling goal and incentives, saying its unattainable and encourages inappropriate actions.

The VA is contacting more than 90,000 veterans that had excessive wait times in order to get them medical care. The agency will hire additional clinical and patient support staff.
