Man drives himself to VA hospital with gunshot wound

BELL COUNTY, TX (KXXV) - Bell County authorities are looking for a crime scene after a man drives himself to the hospital with a gunshot wound.

Bell County Sheriff's spokesperson Donnie Adams says 55-year-old Tommy Pickens drove himself to the Temple Veterans Affairs hospital just after 9 p.m. Thursday night with a gunshot wound. The man told authorities he was shot between 8:30 p.m. and 8:45 p.m., when he stopped to use the restroom at Union Grove Park on Stillhouse Hollow Lake. Initial reports suggested he was shot at Dana Peak Park.

Pickens says he didn't know why the man shot him.

Deputies searched the area, but did not find where he may have been shot. Hours later, investigators were still looking for a crime scene.

The VA hospital transferred the man to Baylor Scott & White hospital in Temple. His condition is unknown, but authorities say he has non-life threatening wounds.
