Woman who died in Milam County wreck identified

MILAM COUNTY - UPDATE: The Texas Department of Criminal Justice on Tuesday identified the woman who died in the wreck in Milam County Monday as 53-year-old Ellaree Mathews.

One woman is dead and six people were injured in a Milam County wreck involving a van that was taking four women from Gatesville's Hackberry Unit to a "chemical dependency treatment service" in Beaumont.

According to DPS Trooper DL Wilson, the accident occurred about 11 a.m. Monday morning, near FM 485 and HWY 77 in Milam County. A van stopped at a stop sign, when it pulled out and was hit by a Hyundai, Wilson says.

The driver of the Hyundai was from Rockdale, and sustained non-life threatening injuries. He is still at Scott & White as of 4 p.m. Monday afternoon.

There were six people in the van. The driver and a passenger worked for Land Manor Inc. and were transporting four of their clients, who were ex-inmates of the Hackberry Unit in Gatesville, to a substance abuse treatment program in Beaumont.

One of the Land Manor clients was killed in the crash, and DPS reports the five other women inside the van were in serious condition. Some were airlifted to Scott & White and the others were taken to Central Texas Hospital in Cameron to be treated.

As of 4 p.m. Monday, the passenger and one of the clients in the van were set to be released from Central Texas Hospital, while the driver of the van and two other clients are still in serious condition.

DPS is not releasing the name of the deceased until next of kin have been notified.
