Fire at fertilizer storage facility in East Texas

ATHENS, TX - Police have cordoned off a five-block radius from an East Texas fertilizer storage facility that caught fire Thursday evening.

The fire broke out about 5:45 p.m., according to officials there.  The mayor told Dallas station WFAA there were no injuries and firefighters were not putting water on the flames, but rather allowing it to burn itself out.

That storage facility is near some railroad tracks about a block from the town square and Henderson County courthouse in that town of about 13,000 residents 70 miles southeast of Dallas.

There are reports the facility stores ammonium nitrate, which is a fertilizer component that can be volatile.

As of 7:15 p.m. tonight most of the flames had burned down, leaving columns of gray smoke.  The building was destroyed.
