Rabid skunk found in Killeen

KILLEEN - A skunk that was found dead in Killeen on May 24, has tested positive for rabies.

Killeen Animal Control Officers were called out to the 4500 block of Greyhound Dr. on May 24, about a dog chasing a skunk. The skunk was later found dead in the backyard of a home in the area. The skunk was picked up and sent for testing in Austin.

On Tuesday, May 27, the Texas Department of State Health Services notified the Killeen Animal Control Unit that the skunk had tested positive for the rabies virus.

Handouts are being given out in the area where the skunk was found about the skunk being found and warnings about rabies.

Residents are asked to take the following precautions:
  1. Make sure your pets rabies vaccinations are up to date
  2. Supervise your pets and/or children when they are outdoors even in fenced yards
  3. Do not approach or touch any wild animal
  4. Report any sick or injured animals or any unusual animal activity to the Killeen Animal Control Unit at: (254) 526-4455 during normal operating hours and at (254) 501-8800 after normal operating hours
