Judy Morales will seek re-election for Temple city council seat she vacated

TEMPLE, TX (KXXV) - Former Temple Mayor Pro Tem Judy Morales has signed up to run in the special election that is being held for the open city council seat that Morales vacated earlier this month.

Morales ran unopposed for the city council seat for district two, but the ballot was set before she pleaded no contest to falsifying documents, and was sentenced to probation.

She stepped down from her seat in late March, but became the council member elect on Saturday, May 10 after running unopposed. In Temple's council meeting on Thursday, May 15, Morales announced she would not accept the position.

That caused the city to have a special election to fill the seat, but on Tuesday, Morales filed for re-election for the same seat.

Mari Paul tried to recall Morales and the entire city council earlier this spring. She says she was appalled when she heard Morales filed again.

"I felt like I had been punched in the gut and I felt completely disgusted," Paul said.

The city, though, says they're okay with Morales running as long as it's in the best interest of the district she covers.

"I think it would be in the council's best interest to let the people of District 2 know that we're going to support and welcome whomever they elect to the position of the District 2 council member," mayor Danny Dunn said.

Morales' neighbors were split in their opinion on her running. Some say they're happy and they just want her to represent them again. Others, like Paul, say she shouldn't run again after going to jail.

"As a politician she's held to certain standards and one of those standards is trust. Trust is a huge thing and she broke that trust," Paul said.

No one else has applied for the special election. The deadline to apply is June 4, and the election is set for July 19. However, Paul says they are trying to find someone from District 2 to run against Morales.

"We will not allow, as citizens of Temple we will not allow her to win the upcoming election it just can't happen," Paul said.

A representative for Morales says she has no comment at this time.
