WACO - Police have arrested a 32-year-old man accused of injuring children and assault family violence for an incident on Valentine's Day.

Joey Dewayne Hammond has been charged with injury to a child, assault family violence with prior convictions, criminal mischief and had outstanding drug and traffic warrants.

Hammond's arrest comes from an incident that occurred on Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, 2014, in the 1800 block of South 24th St. Police say he was visiting the mother of his children, when an argument started.

Waco PD Sgt. Patrick Swanton says Hammond is accused of grabbing one of the children by the back of the head, and shoving the child into another child, which injured them both, ages 5 and 7.

The children's mother rushed the kids outside and into her car to escape from Hammond. Before she was able to leave, Hammond is accused of smashing the windshield with his fist, which sent glass onto the children and their mother. She called police and he then fled.

Police obtained a warrant for Hammond, and on Saturday, May 17, officers found him at a home in the 3100 block of Ethel Ave. When police arrived and began searching the house, officers say they found Hammond hiding in a shower, behind a shower curtain.
