Fired once, some Texas police resurface elsewhere

Posted: Updated:

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The director of the Texas agency overseeing law enforcement acknowledges the system to stop officers fired from one department from moving to another is "broken."

Police chiefs are supposed to file a form for departing officers labeling their work "honorable," ''general" or "dishonorable." But the Austin American-Statesman finds that officers fired for misconduct can still find work elsewhere.

Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Executive Director Kim Vickers tells the newspaper (http://bit.ly/1geCydw ) that "you can no longer trust (the document) to tell you what it's supposed to."

The Statesman found several examples of officers fired by one agency and resurfacing elsewhere.

In one city, Jonestown, three of the department's seven officers had faced discipline by other police agencies in the Austin area.
