Improper burial angers Waco man, city investigates for different reasons

WACO - Dealing with the loss of a love one is already tough enough, but when a funeral home places a family member in the wrong spot that is a different issue. It is a problem the city of Waco thought they resolved in 2007, but seven years later the Dorsey-Keatts Funeral Home is accused of not only digging in an unauthorized cemetery, but a putting the body in the wrong place.

"I'm very frustrated and I am seeking legal representation about this" disgruntled Waco resident, George Douglas, said.

That frustration is at an all-time high, especially after dealing with a similar problem seven years ago. Douglas tried to bury his mom at the Greenwood Cemetery in 2007, but a thin layer of dirt and heavy rains left her casket exposed. He says this time the Dorsey-Keatts Funeral Home buried his brother at the correct cemetery, but in the wrong spot!

"I put a cone by my brother Otis here and the day of the funeral I came back. He was buried in the walk way here. I made a remark to Mr. Dorsey and he gave me no reply," Douglas said.

It is an issue that not only Douglas is dealing with, but so is the city of Waco, for different reasons. In September 2007, the city passed a resolution saying no burials would be allowed at Greenwood Cemetery unless the funeral home showed a deed and get written permission from the city.

In this case, the city says that process never happened.

City Secretary Patricia Ervin says Dorsey-Keatts was given a written notice about their mistake, but nothing more at this time. If another unauthorized burial were to happen again, then action could be taken.

Douglas says he hopes no one will be buried at Greenwood Cemetery in the future and have to deal with an issue like his.

"It hurts me from my heart for me to still come back here because I am hurt from mom with the same funeral home as she was coming up from the ground. And I was hurt from that, and I hadn't been at this place in several years, but hey this is what you get...," Douglas said.

News Channel 25 reached out to the Dorsey-Keatts Funeral Home, but they chose not to give a comment at this time.
