Man sentenced to 6 years in prison for having child porn

Posted:
WACO - A 61-year-old Morgan man was sentenced to six years in federal prison for having over 600 images of child porn.

Gary Joe Smith was also ordered to pay a $2,500 fine and be placed under supervised release for five years after he gets out of jail. He remains on bond pending Bureau of Prisons facility designation.

Smith was being investigated for online exploitation of minors, and on April 23, 2013 a search warrant was served at Smith's home. Authorities seized his home computer, and found over 600 pictures of child porn on it.

Smith pleaded guilty to one count of possession of child pornography on March 6.

“This sentence sends a clear message that those who exploit children in any way will face serious consequences,” Special Agent in Charge Janice Ayala, HSI San Antonio, said in a release. “Preventing and investigating crimes against children is a high priority for HSI. We will continue to dedicate law enforcement resources to identify and bring to justice child predators that traumatize and victimize children.”

This case was investigated by special agents with HSI and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Greg Gloff.
