MCLENNAN COUNTY - A 23-year-old man has been arrested after an investigation found that he was in possession of a WWII military mortar round.

Aaron Josiah Cooper has been charged with possession of a prohibited weapon.

Matt Cawthon with the McLennan County Sheriff's Department says the investigation began with an incident first reported about 10:45 p.m. on April 17. The Waco police responded to a disturbance at on South 26th St.

After arriving, police contacted the Sheriff's Department Bomb Squad after officers found what looked like a mortar shell. The bomb squad confirmed that the device was a military ordnance, and contacted Ft. Hood Explosives Ordnance Disposal Team, who transported the device to Ft. Hood to be destroyed.

The disposal team determined that it was a WWII vintage British Mortar round.

Cooper told sheriff's investigators that he found the mortar behind the community center on Speight, and had taken it home and beaten on it with a hammer, but it had not exploded. Deputies obtained a warrant and arrested Cooper on Monday, May 12.
