Hearne City Council votes to terminate officer who shot and killed 93-year-old woman

HEARNE - The Hearne police officer who shot and killed a 93-year-old woman is fired as of Saturday afternoon. It took less than 30 minutes for the Hearne City Council to deliberate before voting to terminate officer Stephen Stem. This decision comes before the investigation into 93-year-old Pearlie Golden's death.

Tuesday, May 6, officer Stephen Stem responded to this house for a reporting of a woman with a gun. After she allegedly refused to put the gun down stem fatally shot her.
This spark outrage in the community and the city council and city attorney decided to take action.

City Attorney Bryan Russ Jr. said, "It's really not one factor. Its a totality of the circumstances that we looked at. Other than that we're not going to comment on any of the investigation or what the Texas Rangers do. We feel like we needed to make a decision today before the rangers made a decision."

Hearneor Ruben Gomez said they were concerned because this wasn't stem's first officer involved shooting death. "He was cleared by the grand jury on the first incident and we felt, by the recommendation by our attorney. We were not going to wait for that process this time. Again because this is the second incident," said Gomez.

Fledia Satchell's shot and killed by stem back in December 2012. She says she is happy to see this bit of justice today. "I feel good and I feel a lot of weight off of me behind that," said Satchell.

Other members of the community are happy with the decision as well,  but wished it would have happened sooner.

"What was done there was not right, because I asked for him to be fired then," said William Foster. "Had he been fired then, Ms. Golden would be alive."

The Texas Rangers are still investigating the shooting death. Once it is done the district attorney will present the case to a grand jury.
