Hearne Community Holds Protest After Shooting Death of 93-Year-Old Woman

Posted:
HEARNE - Members of the Hearne community are demanding justice after a 93-year old woman was shot and killed by a police officer. Thursday, around a hundred people came out for a peaceful march following the death of 93-year old Pearlie Golden.

Residents in the Hearne community are upset about the shooting death of Pearlie Golden.

"I can't comprehend how a trained police officer can shoot a 93-year old woman, fragile as she was, that was no threat to him," said William Foster, III.

They marched up to the front of the police department building and held a short rally. Quanell X, a New Black Panther Nation activist from Houston was there to speak. And see that justice is served against officer Stephen Stem. Who was already no billed for a similar incident back in 2012.

"We got to stand up and rise up and say enough is enough. And we must not give him a 3rd opportunity," said Quanell. "We want him indicted. We want him arrested. We want him prosecuted. And we no longer want him with a badge or a gun in the city of Hearne Texas or anywhere else in Texas."

The Mayor of Hearne Ruben Gomez, was also there. He announced that there will be a meeting this Saturday to report what happened to city council. They will be able to vote and decide on either disciplinary actions or termination for officer Stephen Stem. The mayor doesn't get a vote, but he is allowed to make a recommendation.

"The recommendation from the mayor is that we go ahead and terminate the officer," said Gomez. "The community has lost confidence in the officer and that's something that the city of Hearne does not want to employ."

Protest leaders say more people will be coming seeking justice for golden.

"You're going to see some federal people coming in here. From the state of Texas representing us in Washington DC. Those people are coming," said Foster. "We hope to get Al Sharpton down here. Quanell is not the only one that's going to show up."

The shooting is still being investigated by the Texas Rangers.
