Area man arrested for impersonating an officer

MCLENNAN COUNTY - Police have arrested a 65-year-old man accused of impersonating an officer and trying to pull over a couple driving down the highway.

Leonard R. Popham faces a charge of impersonating a public servant for an incident that occurred on April 23, on Hwy 6, near Riesel.

According to the McLennan County Sheriff's Office, a couple driving down the highway noticed a white vehicle pulling up behind them. The vehicle then turned on their overhead lights, pulled alongside the couple, and told them to pull over through the PA system.

The couple noticed something didn't look right, and they kept driving. They also noticed a bumper sticker on the truck that did not look appropriate for law enforcement and called 911. They gave police a complete description of the vehicle and a license plate number.

During the investigation, the couple was able to pick the driver out of a photo lineup. An arrest warrant was then obtained for Leonard R. Popham, who is a volunteer firefighter for the Kosse Volunteer Fire Department.

Other agencies in the area had also received earlier reports of a white vehicle attempting to pull people over. Investigator Scaramucci, with the McLennan County Sheriff's Department, asks anyone who has had an experience like this to call him on his direct number at (254) 757-5170.
